New Shura History
Turn 2000
Shura is Thriving. Twenty new Weyrlings had Impressed healthy, though strangely colored dragonets. Twin dragons Hatched, and all the new bonded's grow quickly and healthy.
Rhaelth Rises, and all hopes of even more dragonets in the near future are so close that all can taste it. Shura was sure to grow even stronger. As the dragons Hatched, suddenly, all of the newborns go between. None Impress, and some of the weyrfolk commit suicide from the pitiful keenings that rip through the air for weeks.
Turn 2002
Everyone is still wary of another clutch going completely awol, even Rhaelth who hasn't risen since the Incident. Thread continues to fall, and the dragons rise to defend the people of the South.
Rhaelth finally rises again, and lays a clutch of only eight eggs. Three turn out to be duds, and the dragons are still not as strong as they could be. A sigh of relief comes from all at the Hatching as the five dragonets actually Impress and look healthy.
Turn 2015
Turn after Turn comes and goes, the clutches get bigger and more healthy, including all the new color mutations. The first Opal clutch is laid.
The Opal's clutch of six all Hatch and Impress.
Turn 2050
Threadfall Ends.
Turn 2201
Opals have become the Dominant Queens. It is said that for every two Opal Queens, one Gold Queen is Hatched. The first Opal pair become Weyrwoman and Weyrleader of Shura.
The two Northern Weyrs left, Fort and High Reaches, are very low on dragon population. Neither Weyr has a Queen, and Shura reaches out to help them, sending their senior Queen, the only Gold at Shura to Fort.
The Gold, Rilith, Flies weeks after the transfer and lays a clutch of twelve on the Fort Sands. This Clutch includes a Golden egg.
Turn 2206
High Reaches dragon population is down to low double digits. Only a scarce twenty-three dragons remain at the secluded Northern Weyr. The now mature second Gold at Fort transfers just before she Flies and is caught by High Reaches only high rank dragon left, an older Brown. The resulting clutch is a nice first size of ten.
As the North tries to recover, Shura becomes over populated thanks to the three Opal Queens that were laying large clutches back to back.
Part of Shura breaks off to start a new Weyr with two Opal Queens and just a handful of dragons, including Iolites and Rubies.
The riders dub the new Weyr, Halis Weyr.
Turn 2300
Threadfall Starts again. Halis Weyr is a big help on the Southern Continent. The Northern Weyrs are stronger again, and are able to keep up with the Threadfall on the Northern Continent.
Turn 2350
Threadfall Ends.
Turn 2454
The riders that left Shura over two hundred Turns ago to start Halis are suddenly wiped out. Over one hundred dragons just disappear. Shura riders find no trace that the riders were even ever at the location that they made their new home.
All fire-lizards at Shura suddenly vanish. Everyone, including dragons, are both astounded and baffled. No dragons or any other pets vanish like the fire-lizards.
Turn 2460
A few fire-lizards return to Shura warily, even newly hatched fire-lizards seem to prefer just to between than stay at Shura.
All Beastcrafters start to research why this is happening only to come up emptyhanded.
Turn 2461
The sky darkens, and suddenly, huge fireballs shoot across the sky. The Southern Continent is not hit, but the North is devastated. High Reaches is vaporized in one of the largest impacts that Pern has ever seen. The entire Southern Continent shakes in violent earthquakes. Some apartments and buildings in Holds and Shura Weyr collapse. A few riders die, and their dragons go between.
Tidal waves wipe out entire sea-side settlements and some riverside ones are flooded from the overflow of water down the rivers.
Turn 2500
Shura has recovered well from the devastating meteor impacts on Pern. Fort is barely limping by, and only a few Holds remain very close to Fort Weyr. The rest of the continent is un-inhabitable. Shura dragonriders decide to send twenty riders to Fort to help out with drills, and Searches of the two Holds for new Candidates. A few weyrfolk decide to go to Fort as well, having relatives over on the Northern Continent.
Fort suddenly cuts all ties from Shura and any messengers sent to Fort to figure out what's going on, never return.
Turn 2505
After Turns of silence, one of the riders that transferred from Shura suddenly pops between into the Weyr Bowl at Shura, dragon and rider both severely injured.
The rider told tales of how the Holders and native Fort Weyr riders had killed or taken all Shura transfers prisoners. He had escaped to warn Shura of a possible attack on the Weyr. Fort was desperate to find a more suitable home for itself, in the still fertile Southern Continent.
This was unsettling news, but after weeks, the Fort Weyr riders never showed up.
Turn 2506
Shura discovers that Fort has taken over the old Halis Weyr location in the valley of two mountains. The Weyrleader pays a visit and apologizes for their actions the previous Turn. Fort was just despirate and needed a place to run to.
New Fort and Shura reopen communications.
Turn 2517
New Fort, just like Halis Weyr before them, vanishes without a trace. No blood, no struggle, not even a bit of clothing in the Weyr. It appears as if no one ever lived there.
Shura sends a couple of rider scouts to stay in the Weyr and try to find out what is going on.
Turn 2518
The Shura scouts all return, on foot. All are badly cut up, bruised, and dragonless. They tell tales of strange happenings in Halis/New Fort. None of their stories are quite the same, so nothing is certain. What is certain is that all four have lost their dragons.
Some Healers make connections with the Clutch that betweened so many Turns ago. It seems that somehow, a strange virus seems to make dragons just vanish. The Healers then notice that Holds around the location of Halis swelled around the times that the Weyrs apparently vanished.
One healer does a test on one of the very few fire-lizards that returned from the vanishing from Shura. The Master and his apprentices find a virus, that could potentially kill off all dragons and fire-lizards on Pern if they can't figure a way to make a vaccine.
Turn 2523
The MasterHealer and his team have been at Halis Weyr for five Turns. They found some strange fungus there that seems to contain a lot of the same kinds of proteins that the virus does. They create a Vaccine from the fungi, adding in some natural immunity boosters.
Turn 2524
The Vaccine is distributed all throughout Shura, the only remaining Weyr. Unseen complications occur. All mutation colors, including Opals, have and adverse reaction to the Vaccine and between within a week of being Vaccinated. Luckily, there remains one Gold in Shura.
Gold Viranth Flies and is caught by a strong Bronze. She lays a clutch of twenty eggs.
Turn 2525
The clutch Hatches and reveals twenty strong dragonets. All Impress and Shura begins to rebuild without Opals or any of the other mutated colors, including Whites.
Turn 2585
Again the sky darkens. This time, smaller meteors light the sky up in large numbers. The first wave sails over the Southern Continent and into the ocean, barely making a splash as they vaporize in Pern's atmosphere. The second volley of stones are bigger, and a few head right for Shura, striking into the Weyr Bowl and leaving small craters.
Weeks later, another small volley heralds a much larger Meteor. Fire-lizards, felines, dogs, and every other pet either betweens or flees for their life. This triggers the dragons, keening out like some of their number has died, a warning that Shura is right in the path of this giant rock.
Riders frantically wink in and out of between with supplies, people, and anything they can attach to the dragons, depositing it at a remote lakeside far from Shura's location, a favorite spot of the Weyrleader.
As a few riders pop back to the Weyr last minute to get a few things that were left behind and never make it back. The rock strikes down, flattening Shura and causing small quakes for hours. Forests near the Weyr are flattened as well, and the closest Holds are destroyed as well. Some riders had thought ahead and gotten as many Holdfolk out of the way as possible, anticipating another Northern-like impact.
Turn 2586
The Shura riders decide to set up in the secure place that was once home to Halis and New Fort. Dubbing this Weyr New Shura, the riders go about trying to settle into this much different area. The main part of the Weyr became located in the Valley between Kilragis and Voris Mountains.
The riders take the Weyr into the next step of development, building a bridge over the small yet functional river, later named Halis River, running through the Valley, and being carving out Barracks for Candidates and Weyrlings in the face of Voris Mountain. As half the riders use half of what is left of the stonecutters that a Crafter recreated from the information given by AVIAS, the other half of the riders and stonecutters carved out more rider Weyrs along the face of Kilragis Mountain.
Turn 2587
As the Weyr comes together, a couple of riders with stonecutters find a cavern near the ground on the face of Kilragis, right below the surface. This cavern is large enough to house Hatching Sands, and the floor is naturally heated enough to keep dragon eggs healthy and hot. The Weyrleader and Weyrwoman send out a dozen riders to the desert to bring back soft sand to line the cavern's floor. The old Halis Hatching Sands is covered up with Metalworkings for the Infirmary.
With the stone cut out from the new Barracks and Weyr, the Infirmary and Great Hall, along with all the Kitchen hearths and other much needed things throughout the Weyr.
Turn 2590
New Shura's only Gold Rises. She betweens from old age as soon as her sixteen eggs, including one Gold egg, are safe in the Hatching Sands. Her mate, guards the entrance like an eagle.
The eggs Hatch, all healthy, including the new Queen, Gritorth, who Impresses to a sixteen Turn old girl named Lilian. The clutch also includes two Bronze dragons, three Browns, five Greens, and five Blues.
Turn 2595 - Current
Gritorth finally decides to Rise. She has taken her time, and perhaps Lilian prevented her Bonded from rising out of fear, but now the twenty-one Turn old girl is mentally prepared for it. And Gritorth wastes no time.
It is a decent Flight, and Gritorth is caught by one of her clutchmates. A Bronze by the name of Hilorth, and His Bonded, D'rin, is Lilian's first lover.
Gritorth lays her first clutch of ten eggs in the Hatching Sands, or as some call it Hatching Cavern, and guards it like a mother feline.
What will these ten eggs hold for the lucky ten candidates that will Impress their contents?! And what unknown side effects could the vaccine given to the dragons so many Turns ago might turn up?!
Only time will tell, and with Thread just five Turns away, and the always possible threat of more meteors that very well could destroy Pern completely, it had better be good!
