History (Via the Guardians)
AIVAS had successfully allowed us to escape the dominion of Thread, to escape out from underneath the clouds of devouring, ravenous, thoughtless enemies that had plagued us nearly since we'd come to this planet centuries upon centuries before. It left us with the tools necessary to become more advanced, to heal our sick and farm more efficiently, even to begin tampering with the genetics of our dragons and whers, creating brand new colors never seen before in their dwindling numbers.
It also allowed us the perfect way to destroy ourselves.
As the population swelled, as we became more advanced, humanity became destructive. Neighbor began to fight neighbor, Holds began to set themselves up as fiefdoms, with a ruler that lived more like a Queen or King, and those few remaining dragonriders and wherhandlers became split. Half thought that they should Rule, that they had the might, and thus the right, to dominate the non-riders. Those riders became part of the Flight, and began to rule like Gods over the people, with tithes and armies and power such as they'd never before imagined. And the other half? Well, we'll get to them later.
But then... Came the Great Destruction. One man, Kimen was his name, a name now used as the most horrible of curses, discovered the power of what can now only be called the Destroyer, a simple, yet powerful, bomb that could wipe out entire Holds. He sold the plans for its creation to several holds, and they immediately began to use it on one another, leaving only chaos and destruction behind, killing everyone from the oldest to the youngest. The Flight, too, held its share of these bombs, and threatened its use against any who opposed them, while also allowing anyone who would serve them to come and be protected within their walls. Their grip on society became only stronger, even as the rest of the world tore itself to ruin.
In the end, there were few left. Only the three greatest Holds of Heyyrin, Guryatal, and Messis were left, their survival more thanks to the fact that they have run out of the materials needed to create more Destroyer Bombs than actual peace, with the Flight ruling over all with an iron hand. Its current Senior Queen, Biqual of Gold Namyrisayath, is treated as a living Goddess, her hands running red with the blood of those who's deaths she's ordered. Her spies and her assassins constantly scout for signs of rebellion, putting them down ruthlessly. The Holds whore themselves to her and the Flight for what little they can get, offering up their candidates like sacrificial lambs in hopes that one will become a rider, and mayhap even rise to power, thus assuring their lives and place in this war-torn Pern.
And what of those riders and handlers who did not join the Flight, and who did not become part of the Holds, who did not pick a side and wind up dying? Well. That is where our story truly begins.
We are the Guardians, the Riders and Handlers of Perpetua Weyr, those who remember and wish to return to the old ways where power was not won by the death of others. It is up to us to cleanse the land of the Flight's taint, to return the balance between weyr and hold, to stop the senseless killing. But our numbers are few, and we must remain vigilant against Biqual's pet killers, lest our plans be destroyed. We may not have created the Flight, or started the war, but we are just as guilty for not standing up before. And now, we're the only ones who can fix it, and so we shall.
